Barn Conversion, near Moretonhampstead, Devon

Conversion of a Dartmoor bank barn into a 3/4 bedroom house with outbuildings.

The barn comprised a two storey building excavated into the sloping site, with a roundhouse (for driving farm machinery) at the upper ground level. The conversion has been achieved with only minor alterations to the external fabric, and without compromising the appearance of the building’s isolated setting.

The accommodation is arranged with the living rooms facing South and West onto the open landscape at the upper ground level, the kitchen in the roundhouse, and the principal bedrooms facing East onto a walled garden at lower ground level. A raised floor in the main part of the original barn has overcome the common problems associated with high ceilings and large openings, while providing possibilities for intimate mezzanine areas.

The building is of granite with dressed stonework to openings and all new work has been cut in solid masonry to match. Reclaimed timber has been used throughout and joinery is robustly detailed.
